SAT, ACT, GMAT, LSAT, GRE

Cloud IBT

IBM Watson

Thousands of intelligent students seize up during standardized test season. They’re the ones in the back of the gymnasium, frantically writing to the last minute and choking under the pressure of an egg timer. I am that student.

Perhaps test anxiety doesn’t come from the actual questions sitting in front of us, but rather the fact that these standardized test scores can be life altering. These scores affect our admittance to the right schools, our ability to gain scholarships and our ability to qualify for certain types of aid. The weight of these tests had many of us prematurely self-destructing, and honestly, it doesn’t get any easier as we get older.

Want to do an MBA or law degree? Your qualifying test scores could mean the difference between a great life transition and a mediocre one. Below is a list of test prep resources. If you’re spending your summer prepping, these might just help you gain the confidence you need to come out on top.

1. Watermelon Express: NYC-based Watermelon Express is a learning company that claims to have helped 10,000 members with its mobile, desktop and web applications. The company provides students with detailed performance analysis, projected scores, online forums and customized review pages. Mobile applications are currently available on the iPhone, Blackberry and Android and separate study sets for the GRE, LSAT, SAT, GMAT, MCAT are priced reasonably at $20 each.

2. Grockit: Grockit prepares students for the SAT, ACT, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT and GRE. This service emphasizes the group learning experience and students invite friends from Yahoo, Gmail and Plaxo to join in the site’s games. This is particularly useful for the SATs when large groups of peers are likely to be studying together. The service offers a point system for tests and games, and displays student scoring in terms of community testing percentiles. Additional features include real time chat and the ability to find online tutors. Tutorial rates range from zero to $20 per hour. Grockit is free for the first 35 questions or $40 per year for unlimited access to questions, diagnostic tests and scheduled group games.

3. Brightstorm: Brightstorm focuses on preparing teens for the SAT, ACT and AP-level high school courses. This tool is particularly useful for visual learners because programs offer hours of video courses, strategies and practice exams. What’s interesting about this preparation tool is that while it provides knowledge-based tests and quizzes, it also teaches students strategies to make educated guesses. For example, in one video the instructor says, “On the ACT English, the shortest answer is correct a third of the time.” Brightstorm packages are priced at $99 per test and a 1-800 line is available for questions.

4. EPrep: EPrep also prepares students for the SAT, ACT, PSAT and high school subjects using video instructions. Students complete practice tests in a timed environment, receive grades and review test answers via video tutorials. EPrep offers a free 7 day trial period and packages generally range in price between $69-$249. This service takes a more conventional classroom-style approach to teaching so it’s better for those that excel in this type of environment. For those that prefer a more interactive experience, Watermelon Express and Grockit might be a better fit.

5. Prep Me: Prep Me is a learning environment for students interested in taking the PSAT, ACT and SAT. This service offers an initial diagnostic test and then builds a personalized study schedule for students. Similar to other programs, students can chat with tutors, take practice quizzes and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. The service is currently expanding to offer GMAT, MCAT and LSAT testing and is priced between $300-$700. That being said, the company boasts an average 305 point increase on the SAT for grade 11 students. The company is currently offering premium services for free to students in the state of Maine.

6. Knewton: Knewton is another program that adapts a study plan for students. The company specializes in GMAT, GRE, SAT and LSAT testing and matches videos and lessons to a students “learning arc”. Students can interact via a live on-demand video classroom and the company offers results or a money back guarantee. Courses are priced at $890 for 15 teaching sessions and more than 45 classroom hours. While this is a particularly high price tag for testing services, if a couple hundred dollars is the cost of qualifying for a scholarship, perhaps the service is worth it.

Target group

Killer Contents, Bundling Service

– Serendipity

Platform

Global Global Global……..

Social Learning Platform…

source : http://techcrunch.com/2008/10/15/iknow-is-a-social-learning-platform-that-can-really-make-you-smarter-opens-api/

Although the world market for e-learning is estimated to top $52 billion in 2010 (in 2007, revenues exceeded the $17-billion mark in the US alone), it’s still quite hard to find good resources for education and training in the Web 2.0 space. It seems that so far, the e-learning industry as a whole focuses on applications for enterprises and educational institutions.

But now there is a new player in town: iKnow!, which calls itself an intelligent social learning platform, initially offers a number of English vocabulary extension, SAT preparation and Japanese language courses, but more content will be added in the near future. Tokyo-based Cerego actually started the beta version (in Japanese only) in October 2007 with English courses for Japanese people, now counting more than 280,000 users in Nippon alone. iKnow saw 350,000 unique visitors in September 2008, up 40% from just two months prior in July 2008.

The platform is built upon a learning engine that is supposed to free users from sorting study materials, devising study plans, measuring learning progress and self-managing knowledge on a long-term basis. Users can set personal learning goals and let the system do the heavy lifting. Cerego holds a number of patents on its learning algorithms, which are based on years of research in cognitive science and neuroscience. The performance of its users is continously analyzed, enabling iKnow to promptly adjust learning processes on an individual basis.

iKnow disaggregates information into bite-size pieces (called items), making it easier for users to store, absorb and manage it as personal knowledge on the site.

For instance, the “Erudite Vocabulary 1″ English course features a total of 89 items (i.e. verbs like “immure”, “bruit” or “adumbrate”) that are embedded in 134 different example sentences. The system recommends (and automatically schedules) 28 days for this course but users get to decide themselves whether they want to absorb the study units through multiple short bursts or long study sessions.

Items are studied mainly through multiple choice questions, dictations, brain training games, quizzes etc. In order to attenuate memory decay effects, difficult items have to be reviewed in individually timed intervals and in a different manner (i.e. by letting users spell certain words instead of asking multiple choice questions).

The site allows for users to stop and resume studying anytime and also keeps track of how many items they learnt in the process. After finishing a course, all content studied can be stored for later reference and accessed again anytime.

Acceleration of knowledge acquisition through creating and sharing content

The free site’s key element is the social network functionality, combined with extensive video, image, audio and gaming content.

iKnow users are supposed to not only study on the site but also to accelerate the learning process by creating content and sharing this content with others.

In this example, a user uploaded a YouTube clip of the first presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain and extracted key items and sentences himself. Here Steve Jobs teaches Japanese people English via a similarly processed video. Other users can now systematically learn these items in a structured lesson the system semi-automatically creates based on the user-generated content.(궁금한데요..

The idea of connecting people is especially powerful in the realm of learning languages and in fact, it’s relatively easy to make international friends on the platform. But in contrast to sites likeBabbel, for example, iKnow’s learning algorithms are not limited to languages: Soon users are supposed to learn any type of fact-based information on the site. Think pulling the main bits of information from a Wikipedia article as study units, mixing them with text-based and multimedia content from other websites and sharing the lessons generated by iKnow with other users.

iKnow’s approach of combining a hypermodular, personalized learning methodology with collaborative human power spurred by a social network built on top of it, has the potential to become a blueprint for future online education concepts. The amount of things you can learn and do on iKnow is simply overwhelming.

Online learning is becoming an increasingly crowded field, with sites like LiveMocha, PrepMe orTechCrunch50 runner-up Grockit cropping up by the week. Compared with iKnow, however, most existing e-learning sites set fundamentally different priorities by focusing on non-scientific approaches to learning, paid services, enterprise solutions or neglecting social networking aspects.

And iKnow is likely to expand even more: Cerego opened up their learning API for third party developers from all over the world just today.

It seems that the company is not only gaining momentum with users and now potentially developers, but according to industry insiders, Cerego is close to closing a significant round of financing led by Japanese top-tier investors. We will stay tuned.

Coming Soon, Really Soon!!!!

Swiping to move forward and back between pages

Animations such as flipping animation when the TOC is loaded (on the smartphone form factor for example)

Fade in and out and slide in and out animations for things like instructions during the quiz and showing the tools on the smartphone form factor

We announced Rapid Intake mLearning Studio earlier this week, due to be out this quarter. As you’ll notice, we’re making a big deal about the player being in HTML5. Why? I had that question come up a few times at the recent ASTD TK 2011 conference where we unveiled our mobile learning authoring tools and player for the first time. “Why not go with Flash?” some people asked. Or, “Why not go with straight HTML?”First of all, let’s define HTML5. There are really two “true” definitions:- First, HTML5 is a new version of the HTML ‘programming’ language. It’s not officially a programming language, but for the lay person it’s probably helpful to think of it that way because when you look at it you say, “Hey, this look like a bunch of hooey and I can’t understand it.” HTML is the language that makes up most traditional web pages. HTML5 just means that there is a new version (think versions of software, like PowerPoint 2007 versus 2003) of the HTML language that includes some great new features (such as built-in support for video). That’s the technical definition, you might say, of the term ‘HTML5′.However, HTMl5, by itself, doesn’t really get the job done, as far as mLearning goes, because HTML5 by itself is largely a static, one-way presentation-capable kind of language that is richer than before, but isn’t really built around interactivity. Enter JavaScript and CSS.

- The second definition of HTML5, and the one that most people MEAN when they say ‘HTML5′ refers to a combination of three different technologies used together to make a rich, animated, and interactive experience in the mobile browser without any plug-in (aka Flash). The three technologies are: HTML (yes, version 5), Javascript (for interactivity), CSS (version 3) for layout and animation. Combined, these three technologies pack a real punch.

For what I consider to be the most amazing use of HTML5, check out this site thatCraig Weiss pointed me to at the BYOL eLearning conference last Fall:

http://www.nevermindthebullets.com/ (for heaven’s sake make SURE you view this in a browser that supports HTML5, like Chrome or Safari!—it’s just not the same otherwise and you’ll wonder what the big deal is)

So–why HTML5 and not straight HTML? Straight HTML is static. HTML5 is dynamic–meaning it can be interactive and animate.

So what does HTML5 do for us specifically in the mLearning Studio player? It gives the learner the feeling they are in something like a native app because it animates and interacts like a native app, even though they are running in a mobile web browser! Yes, that is very cool. And it is important, because it needs to run in the mobile browser to be able to communicate directly with the LMS via SCORM. HTML5 gives the learner interactivity and animation, such as:

Swiping to move forward and back between pages

Animations such as flipping animation when the TOC is loaded (on the smartphone form factor for example)

Fade in and out and slide in and out animations for things like instructions during the quiz and showing the tools on the smartphone form factor

Dynamic links to the glossary terms so that the definitions pops up on top of the content

Popup animation and content for quiz feedback

Lot’s of other things–but those are a few examples. In short, it provides an app-like experience even though it’s running the web browser

More importantly, however is cross-platform compatibility. If only Flash were to work on the iOS–we probably would have developed in Flash (see my post several months ago on the Flash vs HTML5 controversy for more details on that). But, it doesn’t, and iOS, Android, and the latest Blackberry OS supports HTML5 in the mobile browsers. This means that courses you build with mLearning Studio work on just about any platform, assuming learners have a later mobile device and not some dinosaur. Finally, HTML5 will allow us to fully recreate our current e-learning interactions, such as the branching scenario sims, learning games, and so on–which will be included in Rapid Intake mLearning Studio later this year. What other amazing examples of HTML5 have you seen? (I honestly can’t get enough of playing with the interactivity and the incredible artwork in thenevermindthebullets.com project.) What uses of HTML5 do you anticipate in mLearning?

Apps in the classroom Textbook publishers experiment with iPad-based lessons

Virginia Official with Pearson Education Inc,.

Digital Textbook

왜 하필 아이패드이냐 하는 질문에…Bethlam Forsa(executive vice president for content development and publishing operations at Houghton Mifflin.)

Education Market, $8.1 billion in revenue in 2009(according to Simba Information)-Pearson $5.9 billion, Houghton Mifflin $1.7billion

Houghton Mifflin Algebra도 Small Step방식의 교육 콘텐츠 전략을 채용한것 으로 보인다(One step a time이라는 단어로 보았을 때)

이 플랫폼에서는 그리고 모든 액티비티는 저장되고, 이를 통해 보다 높은 영역으로 참여하고 싶은 동기부여를 충분히 하고 있다고 말한다.“a higher level of engagement, a higher level of interactivity.’’

HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 is based on the award-winning Holt McDougal Algebra 1 textbook. Students and educators using HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 will benefit from:

Immediate assessment results sent to teachers so they can better differentiate instruction

Instructional videos for every example that teach or re-teach key concepts

Vocabulary support throughout with links to a complete glossary that includes audio definitions

Tips, hints, and links that enable students to acquire the help they need to understand the lessons

Step-by-step animations that demonstrate problem solving

Notes and scratchpad features that allow students to take notes within the HMH Fuse: Algebra 1 application

Quizzes that assess students’ skills before they begin a concept and at strategic points throughout the chapters so they can review and practice particular areas of focus. Instant, automatic grading of quizzes lets students know exactly how they have performed.

♦ Activating knowledge before a classroom (or virtual classroom or even and eLearning session);
♦ Summarizing (after one of those sessions – delivered soon after the session);
♦ Recall (or reactivating knowledge – probably a week or two after the session. This ensures key concepts are revisited and helps in transferring the new knowledge to long term memory – especially for learners who may not get a chance to apply new knowledge immediately after the sessions);
♦ Providing application opportunities (through pop quizzes or learning games on mobile);
♦ Just-in-time search support by letting employees search in company’s knowledge databases (wikis, blogs, forums) using their mobiles.

Open Business Model :

Nine sigma :

The Innovation Xchange :

Shanghai Silicon Intellectual Property Exchange : SSIPEX

Oceon Tomo :

Richard Rosenbloom

System Integration

Inkling – Interactive digital textbook platform

Location: San Francisco, CA

Notable apps: Inkling (Free)

Platforms: iPad only

Specialty genres: Education

Company size: 35 people

Short description of company: Inkling is building a platform for interactive learning content. Backed by Sequoia capital, the company is changing the way interactive experiences are created for multitouch devices like iPad. The company partners with major publishers like John Wiley & Sons, Inc. to create interactive content experiences that go far beyond the printed book.

Higher Educaiton / Life Long Division에도 상당한 영향을 미치리라 판단된다.

The iPad Software Development Kit, which gave developers the tools to build software for the iPad, was released less than ten months ago. Since then, we’ve worked diligently to build our vision for the structure and presentation of learning content on multitouch devices.

Admittedly, it would have been much easier if we’d taken the existing outputs of the print publication process (i.e., PDFs, EPUB, and the like), shoehorned them onto an iPad, and called it the future of digital textbooks. But this would have been a rendition of the past, rather than a vision for the future. We wanted to take advantage of an entirely new medium and the freedom of a fresh start, technologically speaking, to build something fundamentally better.
